Mari Murdvee

Mari Murdvee (born 1959) studied the classical languages and literature. She now works at the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Library of the University of Tartu. She also teaches Latin at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Tartu and Ancient Greek at the Tartu Theological Academy. Mari Murdvee is also a graduate of the Drama Studio, run by Jaan Tooming and Ãœlo Vilimaa at the Theatre Vanemuine. With the students of the Department of Classical Philology of the  University of Tartu she has staged the 7th Song of Homer's Odyssey (1992), Theocritus' Soothsayer (1994) and a recital of Sappho's poetry (1994). In 1997 and 1998, in collaboration with Heli Kohv, she organised summer seminars (called Symposia) on ancient Greek culture. At the Early Music Festival (2000) she directed the opening performance of Aristophanes' play "Birds". She has translated Menandros and Aristophanes from Greek and Petrach, Horace, Hrotsvit and others from Latin. Her translations have been published by the literary journals Akadeemia and Vikerkaar.
